The Story of NPORS: The Accreditation Scheme That Revolutionised the Construction Industry

Ever since its launch in 1992, the National Plant Operators Registration Scheme (NPORS) has been a well-respected accreditation and registration body in the UK. NPORS is a dynamic organisation that caters to a broad range of industries, including Construction, Industrial, Utilities, Warehousing and Distribution, Agricultural, Ports, and Marine.

NPORS has been an active member of The Accrediting Bodies Association (ABA) since day one, and it collaborates closely with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to provide training advice in accordance with L117. With a firm commitment to upholding standards and offering flexibility, NPORS works together with industry experts and accredited training providers like Plant and Safety Limited to ensure compliance on both national and international levels.

The NPORS is gaining ground as a reputable plant training program in the United Kingdom. Although it may not have the same level of widespread recognition as the CPCS card scheme, many construction firms are starting to prefer it due to its progressive improvements over time. The Build UK, which represents the UK construction industry, has also approved the NPORS training.

What makes the NPORS training unique is its flexibility, as it can be conducted on-site instead of just being limited to a training centre. Furthermore, the program has aligned itself with CSCS, allowing training cards to bear the CSCS logo after passing the appropriate HS&E test.

Furthermore, NPORS now offer plant operators the opportunity to progress their skills and competency by providing Trained Operator and Experienced Operator cards, depending on operator’s level of experience. These can be achieved via an NVQ.

Cards Available

NPORS Traditional card (5-year validity)

NPORS Red Trained Operator card – CSCS Embossed (2-year validity)

NPORS Blue Competent Operator card – CSCS Embossed (5-year validity) *restrictions available upon request (site/contractor specific)
